Beaches in Anglesey - Top 6

The Isle of Anglesey is embraced by 125 miles of coastline and most of this is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This coastline offers 27 excellent sandy beaches and rocky coves, all linked to each other by the stunning Coastal Path that circles the island.

Six of Anglesey's beaches received the prestigious European Blue Flag award in 2010. Namely, Benllech, Church Bay, Llanddona, Llanddwyn, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay - all discussed in more detail below.

The 6 Blue Flag Beaches in Anglesey

Benllech BeachBenllech is a long sandy beach and a huge family favourite. Situated on the east coast of Anglesey, Benllech one of the island?s most beautiful beaches set in a crescent-shaped bay. Exceptionally safe for bathing and paddling with excellent disabled facilities and practical access for both prams and disabled visitors.

At low tide the sand stretches for miles giving young children plenty of space in which to play and providing a flat expanse of land, ideal for a gentle stroll. Dotted along the beach are a variety of shops, cafes and ice-cream parlours. The beach is also near the town of Benllech which offers a wide selection of pubs, restaurants and shops.

Anglesey BeachChurch Bay (Porth Swtan) is a sand and pebble bay edged with rockpools. The beach offers plenty of space to sunbathe and is backed by cliffs with coastal footpaths. Church Bay beach is located between Carmel Head and Holy Island on the North West of Anglesey, North Wales. Facilities include toilets (including disabled) and a cafe / restaurant.

Blue flag beach in AngleseyLlanddona offers a long sandy beach on the eastern side of Anglesey. This stretch of sand extends all the way to Red Wharf Bay and is an ideal venue for games as it never seems full. Popular with families, it is also a good location for canoeing, sailing and fishing. The beach offers basic amenities including toilets and beach café, whilst the nearby village of Llanddona or Beaumaris provide a wider choice of amusements. Llanddona is perhaps most famous for its tales of witchcraft, and 'the witches of Llanddona' are well-known. Historically, these ship-wrecked foreigners settled on common land along the sea shore, and were feared among the local community.

Beach in AngleseyLlanddwyn beach, near Newborough on the South West corner of Anglesey is blessed with miles of sandy beach and a romantic history. Renowned as one of the finest beaches in Britain, Llanddwyn is popular for sunbathing, bathing, windsurfing, kite-surfing and fishing. Backed by luscious forest and impressive sand dunes, it boasts spectacular views back towards the mainland of Wales, including Snowdonia National Park, Caemarfon and the Lleyn Peninsula.

A 2 mile walk takes you to the nature reserve at Llandwyn Island with quiet coves and an old lighthouse. It was here, on the historical site of Ynys Llanddwyn that St. Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, founded her church. Her legend remains as January 25 is still celebrated as a national day for lovers in Wales.

Beach Isle of AngleseyPorth Dafrach beach is located in a beautiful sandy bay surrounded by rocky headland between Trearddur Bay and Holyhead on Holy Island. With its enticing rock pools and meandering coastal path, this beach is ideal for a peaceful family day out. It is also popular for watersports, particularly windsurfing, surfing, canoeing, sailing and jet skiing. Toilet facilities (including disabled) with other amenities a short drive away.

Beach AngleseyTrearddur Bay is a fine long sandy beach on Holy Island, two miles from Holyhead town. One of Anglesey's premier beaches; popular with families and those who enjoy water sports such as sailing, canoeing, diving, surfboarding and water skiing. The beach has a protected bathing area and inviting rock pools, along with toilet facilities (including disabled), car parks and a beach warden service. Other facilities include a playground for children, nearby cafes and restaurants, a local store and Post Office.
