Five of Ceredigion’s rural beaches have been praised for reaching the highest possible bathing water quality and for their unspoilt nature and cleanliness.

Beaches at Clarach, Llanrhystud, Aberaeron South, Penbryn and Mwnt have all received a 2010 Green Coast Award.

A record 50 Welsh beaches have picked up Green Coast Awards this year.

The award, introduced in Wales in 1997 by Keep Wales Tidy, recognises beaches which do not have the infrastructure to meet international beach awards.

The number of Ceredigion’s rural beaches given the award has increased by one from the four that achieved the Green Coast standard in 2009.

Councillor Eurfyl Evans, Ceredigion’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Economic Development and Tourism, welcomed the announcement.

He said: “This is a perfect start to the holiday season in Ceredigion.

“The Ceredigion coast and our rural beaches are amongst the best in Wales and visitors to the area this season can be assured of the highest possible standards.”

The award also emphasises local community involvement in caring for the beaches, including the removal of litter, identifying sites of ecological and historical interest and ensuring that the highest environmental standards are maintained, sustainably

The results of Ceredigion’s submissions for International Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for its beaches are expected during the coming months.

In 2009, beaches at Aberporth, Borth, Llangrannog, New Quay and Tresaith achieved Blue Flag status.
