Reviews

Absolutely lovely place with outstanding views. The local waterfall is a must. It's nearly a perfect spot and can't be faulted.Couple from Lancashire - 28th May 2016
It was utterly delightful.
A beautiful location, wonderful views, spectacular wildlife... The owner was lovely and could not be more helpful and accommodating. The location was very dog-friendly and our two boxers had a whale of a time. The whole experience was a complete tonic. Didn't really stay long enough to fully explore the area but it is generally very scenic and there is lots to do and see. Lake Vyrnwy is a must for bid-watching and we also explored the Pontcysyllte aquaduct, which was pretty amazingBeth from Leicester - 10th April 2016

Local Area

Llety'r Dylluan Wen is a stunning holiday cottage set on the very edge of the Tanat Valley 1 mile from the village of Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant in Mid Wales, surrounded by rolling fields and wildlife. The nearest towns are Llanfyllin (6 miles) and, just over the border, Oswestry (15 miles).

Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant is a quaint village set in the heart of the Tanat Valley mid Wales. It is home to Pistyll Rhaeadr, the largest waterfall in Wales and the UK’s tallest single drop waterfall at 240ft (80m) high. Hidden away in an enchanting area in the Berwyn Mountains, there is a tea shop at the bottom of it and many walkers return year after year to climb up the waterfall. With its beauty changing season after season it is a favourite of walkers and locals alike.

The village itself has a café, good quality Butchers shop, post office, grocery stores and a good selection of pubs to choose from. Llanrhaeadr also found fame in 1995 when scenes from 'The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain', starring Hugh Grant, was filmed in the village.

This unspoilt and relatively undiscovered part of Mid Wales is the perfect base for enjoying nature at its very best. Walking, cycling, bird watching, National Trust properties and historic towns are all frequently enjoyed. Please note that bikes can be hired locally and delivered to the cottage door is you wish.

The nearby Berwyn hills are a beautiful Mountain range in Wales and are ideal for those who like to walk high level moorland walks. The Berwyn Ridge walk is easily accessed from Owl Barn Retreat and on clear days offers the most amazing views across Wales, the Shropshire borders and across Snowdonia. The climbs are suitable for a range of levels.

Situated on the edge of Snowdonia, Lake Vyrnwy is a beautiful lake hidden amongst the surrounding valleys, 9 miles from Barn Owl Retreat.

There is an RSPB visitors centre based at Lake Vyrnwy offering an opportunity to go into the viewing hides to watch the many different types of birds that are attracted to this area. It is a beautiful place to visit. You should be able to see and hear pied flycatchers and redstarts, while dippers nest by the lake and rocky streams, great crested grebes and goosanders bob on the water, and above you, ravens, buzzards and perhaps a peregrine soar in the skies.
