Mathry was the birthplace of Jemima Fawr, a Welsh heroine who led the women of Pembrokeshire into battle in what is known as the last invasion of Britain in 1797. Local heroine Jemima single handedly captured many of the invaders and the Frenchmen later negotiated their surrender at the Royal Oak inn and laid down their arms on Goodwick Sands.
