Caernarfon Castle

Mighty Caernarfon is possibly the most famous of Wales's many castles. Its sheer scale and commanding presence sets it apart from the rest, and, to this day still trumpet in no uncertain terms the intentions of its builder, Edward I of England. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when Edward I began replacing it with the current stone structure, not only as a military stronghold but also as a seat of government and royal palace.
