This cosy cottage is an end-link property on a row of terraced cottages first built in the 1800's by a local entrepreneur. Just a short walk away (a few hundred meters) is the small town centre, full of book shops, independent retailers and some great places to eat and enjoy. Some of the most popular pubs include The Three Tuns, The Old Black Lion and The Blue Boar whilst for food the Red Indigo and Tomatitos come highly recommended. Hay-on-Wye is officially in Wales but parts sit just across the border in England. The annual Hay Literature festival takes place in May and draws speakers, shows and entertainers from all over the world.
Hay-on-Wye is located just on the North Eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The park stretches over 519 square miles and includes many mountains, lakes and activities. It is also a Dark Sky reserve, this means that with low levels of light pollution this is the perfect place to stargaze. Within the Brecon Beacons, Pen y Fan is a popular walk, as well as Hay Bluff while there are plenty of others too including Llyn y Fan, a mythical lake from which it is said that Arthurian legend 'the lady of the lake' originated.
Tintern Abbey, Chepstow, Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye and Hereford are all on the banks of this famous river. The river still has a good salmon run and at one point was one of the premier salmon rivers in the UK. These days it is very popular with kayakers and canoeists. These can be hired locally and includes drop off and pick up further down stream. Wild swimming is increasingly popular and there are plenty of spots nearby for this.
