Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway
Pontypool to Blaenavon Railway began in 1980 and is operated by volunteers. The line was originally used to transport coal and to take the miners to work but now can be enjoyed by everyone. The trains run from Blaenavon at Furnace Sidings. The line north is one of the steepest in Britain and offers fabulous views. The imaginatively titled Whistle Station is 1300 feet above sea level and is one of the highest stations in the UK. The station has a great collection of memorabilia and a pretty handy coffee shop. Maybe combine it with a visit to Big Pit.
